Depth works with Compression to
select what part of the image is filled into the facets. In the
original Prism plugin the image sample always starts at the outer
edge. So the left facet starts with the left side of the image
and moves toward the right, the top facet starts with the top
of the image and moves toward the bottom, etc. The main problem
with that is that the interesting part of the image is usually in
the center, but the sample always takes in more from the less
desirable outer area than from the center area.
In Prism+, depth moves the start point away from the edge and toward
the opposite side of the image so that the content in the facets can
be concentrated on a more interesting part of the image closer to the
center. For example at depth 30, the left facet sample starts 30% of
away from the left edge of the image.
The close relationship between Compression and Depth controls has an
interesting side effect. At some point the Depth control reaches a
limit and increasing the value beyond that doesn't change the effect
any more. For example with 40% compression, Depth changes the effect
until it reaches 60.
After that the facets don't change anymore. That's because when 40%
of the image is compressed into the facets, the farthest away from
the edge that the sample can begin is 60% of the way toward the
other side of the image. When that happens the plugin ignores the
Depth value and instead automatically uses the largest value that
leaves enough of the image to satisfy the Compression setting.
The following example shows Depth at two different settings.
Depth = 0

Depth = 30
