Range changes the amount of the sample area that is used
to fill the slices. At the default setting of 100, all
of the sample area (100%) is used. As the range gets smaller,
only part of the sample area is used and the sample is repeated
as many times as necessary to fill the slice. As the sample
is repeated it reverses direction each time so that a secondary
mirror effect appears going from the center out toward the
edge of the image.
For example if range is set to 25, only 25% of the sample is
used so it has to be repeated 4 times to fill each slice. The
first time it is painted forward, the second time in reverse,
the third time forward again and the fourth time in reverse
again.
The following diagrams illustrate what range does at 100
compared to 25.
