Auto Size automatically shapes the frame to an exact multiple of the
texture tile size. Tile size may be either the texture width or
height depending on the state of Max Tiling.
But Auto Size only works when the image is significantly larger than the
texture. So the plugin automatically disables the Auto Size check box
when it decides that it can't do auto sizing properly. The rule for
enabling Auto Size is that the image width and height must be at least
3 times the tile size.
In most cases the original image dimensions will not be a multiple of
the tile size. So Auto Size reduces the frame size to fit within the
image boundaries. A side effect of this is that there will usually be
an area around the perimeter of the image excluded from the frame. The
Fill control gives you a choice of either
leaving the excluded area unmodified or filling with a single solid
color that you can select.
One alternative to remove the outer perimiter fill area is to
manually resize the image canvas to a multiple of the tile size.
That's what the Size Info boxes are for.
They show the next larger size the image should be to fit an exact number
of tiles into a frame that extends to the image boundaries. Another
alternative is to apply the auto sized frame to the image and then crop
the image to fit the frame. The Fill control
is intended to help with image cropping by allowing you to fill the
outer perimeter area with a single solid color, making it easy to select
the area with the graphics editor's magic wand tool. Once the area is
selected, invert the selection and then crop the image.
One more thing to note is that because the frame size is always restricted
to a multiple of the tile size, the Frame Width
control may seem to work strangely. What happens is that as you increase
the Frame Width, no frame is painted until it reaches at least 1 tile
size. Then the frame suddenly appears all at once. As you increase the
Frame Width more, this repeats until it reaches 2 times the tile size,
etc., with the frame suddenly changing width by a multiple of the tile
size as you cross each tile size boundary. This is the way the plugin
is designed to work when Auto Size is selected.
The following example shows the same frame applied to an image without
Auto Size selected and with Auto Size selected. In this case the image
dimensions are not a multiple of the tile size, so the frame is smaller
than the image.
