The range controls appear with several slider controls
that have a very large range of possible values. Each range
control is associated with the slider control immediately to the
left of it. When a slider control has a very wide range it doesn't
move very far with one mouse click so it can take almost forever to
get from one end to the other. So the range control is provided to
make the slider move much more quickly but at much lower resolution.

It does this by multiplying the movement of the slider by 1 (nominal),
10 or 100. At the nominal setting (1) the slider works just like any
other sliders with a normal small range of values. Clicking on the
end caps moves it by 1 and clicking in the center bar moves it by 10.
With range 10, the end cap movement is 10 and the center bar
movement is 100 per click. And with range 100 the end cap
movement is 100 and the center bar movement is 1000 per click.

For example with the Position controls you can
start with range 100 to scan quickly to an area of the image you
are interested in. Then when you get close, you can drop down to range
10 for more accurate positioning and finally down to range 1 for
fine tuning.
